The Weber State University Soccer Team’s season came to a disappointing close Saturday afternoon with a loss to the Idaho State University Bengals. ISU held the Wildcats scoreless throughout the game, coming away with a 4-0 victory.
WSU ended the season with a 6-12 record overall, and a 2-5 record in conference play. As a result of their record in league play, the Wildcats failed to earn a playoff berth in the Big Sky Conference Tournament. The Bengals clinched a spot in the playoffs with their victory over WSU.
Playing in front of a crowd of over 450 spectators in Pocatello, Idaho, ISU’s offense kept the Wildcat defense busy. The Bengals attempted eight shots on the goal during the game. The Wildcats were only able to attempt two shots on the goal. The Bengals scored their first two goals near the end of the first half. The Wildcats were unable to catch up during the second half, and ISU’s last two goals were scored near the end of the game.
ISU’s final goal was scored when Bengal Christina Beseris headed the ball into the goal off a corner kick by teammate Annamarie Hofstetter.
The Wildcats allowed their frustration to show in the second half of the game, when yellow card penalties were called against forwards Jessie Baddley and Kelly Robinson. A red card penalty was called on Wildcat defender Shannon Thompson during last ten minutes of the game.
ISU Head Coach Allison Gibson said in a press release that home field advantage played a major role in the Bengals’ victory.
“This is a really hard place to play for opponents,” she said. “It’s so loud and there is so much energy in the stadium and I think it has continued to be true. Our kids, we feed off it so much. The crowd is just awesome.”
WSU seniors played well in their final game. Senior goalkeeper Rebecca Ritchie finished the game with four saves. Forward Kelly Robinson attempted three of WSU’s ten shots, one of which was a shot on the goal. Defender Shannon Thompson played the game’s entire 90 minutes, while contributing an attempted shot. Defender Lindsay Griffin contributed 70 minutes on the field.
