Montana State University hosted Portland State University in the Big Sky Championship Tournament Quarterfinals on Saturday, March 6. The MSU Bobcats and the PSU Vikings were head-to-head for the entire game, the lead consistently changing.
The largest lead of the game went to PSU with a score of 25-19 towards the end of the first half.
The Vikings retied the Bobcats with a pair of three-pointers from Danny Piepoli before gaining the lead 27-25 with 1:52 left in the half. The score would tie again at 29 going into the half, with the Vikings jumping to a quick lead before the lead continued to change throughout the second half.
With just under 11 minutes remaining in the game, the Bobcats were ahead 50-46. The Vikings took back the lead with a little more than five minutes remaining, which led to eight consecutive lead changes. With 1:05 remaining, Bobcat Braden Johnson took the lead with a three-pointer, for a score of 65-63. The Viking’s Paul Guede, who was fouled on a rebound, made both free throws, tying the score at 65 with 35 seconds remaining in the game. MSU turned the ball over shortly after, allowing for PSU to regain the ball and a 68-65 win off a three-pointer from Melvin Jones.
The PSU Vikings will take on Weber State University on Tuesday, March, 9 at 7 p.m. in a semifinal game at the Dee Events Center.
