Do It Yourself: Creative ways to become more creative!
The Department of Visual Arts at Weber State University understands that art is at an all-time high, and students who understand and have art experience will do better in other areas of study. Student art majors were asked what they thought of when they heard the term “do it yourself.” There were many different responses as to what students can do and what they can learn to do themselves.
Photography, painting, pottery, sewing and cooking all came up from different student perspectives. Art majors were asked what classes they thought would most help students become more creative and do things on their own.
“Any art class you take is going to teach you to do things yourself,” Erica Stearns said. “You don’t know what you are going to like until you try it.”
Students were asked what kinds of things they were doing themselves to either be creative or to fit a tight budget.
WSU student Monique Allen said, “We were thinking about making some blankets for people for Christmas this year, sewing squares together and making TV blankets.”
Allen’s friend Dominique Cory said, “We like creating our own wreaths, decorating them and hanging them at our house.”
These are easy things for a family to do together as well as students and their friends. There is money to be saved and fun memories to come from taking the time to do things on our own.
When asked what class would be most beneficial to students learning to be creative, Allen said, “Intro to art.”
WSU student Camila Corcoran says in reference to what she does on her own, “I draw every day, and I do crafts with my kids.”
According to Corcoran, there are many different avenues of creativity, and the class she recommends to students is “art orientation, for a non-art major. You go in and buy a kit and you learn all of the basics, everything.”
Creativity is different from being artistic to many students. Creativity is the ability to think up and design new inventions, produce works of art, solve problems in new ways or develop an idea based on an unconventional approach. Being artistic can be described in many different ways, but perhaps the best way to describe it is as the conscious production of sounds, colors, forms, movements and other elements that affect the sense of beauty, especially in a graphic way. In any case, if students want to be creative, artistic or crafty, WSU has many classes that can teach students to do new things.
Student Shawn Vegvari said that for students trying to get in touch with their creative side, “3D design and ceramics class are good classes to start with.”
Weber State University has many different programs and classes offered to help students be creative and teach students what it truly means to be able to do things on their own. The different classes range from painting, making jewelry, ceramics and weaving. As part of general education requirements, students are required to take one course of creative arts. This helps students build creativity and become independent with their creativity as well.
