The Signpost

Being hand-selected by indie princess Regina Spektor as her opening act for her latest tour is no small feat. The idea behind an opening act is to be similar to the headliner without sounding like a carbon copy. Brooklyn’s Jupiter One doesn’t need to worry about that, seeing as they can’t be called a direct emulation of anyone else in the music scene.
Situated somewhere between indie and New Wave styles, Jupiter One takes their name from the home of the Robinson family of the 1965 classic “Lost in Space” and sounds like the ship itself has been drifting through space writing catchy music for the past 40 years. It’s no surprise the New York quintet’s new album is titled Sunshower, because it’s full of bright and shiny indie pop riffs.
The first single off the album, “Flaming Arrow,” sounds like the child of The Shins and Hot Hot Heat: an infectious, bouncy indie strum session you can imagine hearing on Open Mic Night at your local coffee shop.
Another track, “Come On,” sounds like it could be an anthem for a generation, with its heavy guitar and empowering lyrics such as “I’ve tried so many ways now / To get you back on your feet / And I know you know you’ll feel better if you / Hear the truth from me.”
It’s nice to know that amid a sea of overproduced, overplayed and over-the-top acts, some bands don’t get lost in the scene, or lost in space for that matter.
