WSU football adds to coaching staff

The Weber State University football team announced the hiring of Robin Pflugrad as the new offensive coordinator on Thursday.

Head coach Jody Sears also announced the hiring of Steve Morton as associate head coach and Eric Lewis as defensive coordinator. Last season, Morton and Lewis were both assistant coaches for WSU.

Sears said he is excited about the new hires and that he feels they will help the team continue to improve.

“I’m very excited for these coaching staff announcements and the direction our football program is headed,” Sears said. “Coach Pflugrad has great experience and expertise as a football coach and is a wonderful person and family man.”

One thing Sears said has been important to him in picking a new staff is finding people who are not only good coaches, but good people as well.

“We are fortunate to have such a wonderful person on our staff,” Sears said. “He (Pflugrad) brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our program, and his track record speaks for itself. He brings experience not only in the Pac-10, but also has 11 seasons as an assistant and head coach in the Big Sky. He will be a great asset.”

Pflugrad brings nearly 30 years of coaching experience to the Wildcat program. In addition to serving as offensive coordinator, he will also coach the running backs.

Pflugrad said he is excited about joining the staff and looks forward to the chance to work with Sears and the rest of the WSU coaching staff.

“I’m extremely excited to return to coaching and really appreciate the opportunity presented to me by Coach Sears and athletic director Jerry Bovee to come to Weber State,” Pflugrad said. “I’ve always had respect for WSU as a university and a football program, and I’m looking forward to being a part of this program.”

Before coming to WSU, Pflugrad was the head coach at the University of Montana in 2010-11. He helped the Grizzlies to an 11-win season in 2011. He also led UM to the conference championship that year.

From 2006-08, Pflugrad was an assistant coach at the University of Oregon, where he served as the wide-receivers coach for the three seasons with the Ducks under head coach Mike Bellotti, a former WSU assistant coach.

In his time as a coach, Pflugrad has coached many players who went on to play in the NFL and the Canadian Football League.

Before coming to WSU, Morton spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Washington State University, where he coached with Sears. Morton began his coaching career in 1975 as a Washington State graduate assistant under Jim Walden. He became a full-time assistant coach at his alma mater in 1977 and spent the next 10 seasons in Pullman, Wash.

The Wildcats will start spring practice in the coming month and work toward preparing for the upcoming season.
