Tennis team picks up first win

The Weber State University women’s tennis team claimed its first win of the season on Tuesday against Idaho State University. WSU took a convincing 6-1 victory over its conference rivals.

The Wildcats took an early lead, winning the No. 1 and 3 doubles matches. Kristi Elmer and Thais Kurer knocked off Svenja Tegtmeier and her partner Wiebke Boeckman 8-4 in the No. 1 seed match. In the third-seed match, WSU’s Nittaya Phonharath and Carly Lloyd defeated Marian Tangarife and Laura Theus 8-2.

WSU had the lead in the No. 2 match, but Ashley Tanner and Michelle Warwick were unable to hold on, losing to Kasey Bacon and Madelyn Weltzin.

WSU dominated singles play. Elmer knocked off Weltzin in the No. 2 match, winning 6-0, 6-1. Kurer also won in singles with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Zamira Vasquez at No. 4. Elmer and Kurer are both on a four-match personal winning streak, having won in singles and doubles against Seattle University in the team’s previous outing.

In the No. 1 singles match, Tanner defeated Bacon 7-5, 6-2, while Annika Karlsen defeated Theus 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 in the No. 6 spot. Phonharath took the No. 3 match in three sets, getting past Tangarife 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

The Wildcats, who improved to 1-3 on the season, will next head to Las Vegas, where they will face off against New Mexico State University and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas this weekend.
